Burnt Roti Issue #5
Burnt Roti Issue #5
They came, they went, they haven’t gone anywhere. They are us.
The South Asian Tory phenomenon.
In this issue, we dissect the conservative history, present and future of the South Asian community. It’s something we have collectively shied away from for a long time – and understandably so. It’s painstakingly embarrassing.
But sometimes, revealing our shame can be freeing.
And so here, we give you the space to see our history, understand our own discriminations, and feel equipped to process it.
Not only do we discuss wealth and caste inequality, we also give you a history of our resistance. Because alongside this conservatism has always been those who fight it, and they should never be forgotten.
The conversation of our history, neocolonialism and an imperialist echo are endless.
This is simply one part of it.
Let’s continue to resist.
They are us, but we are not them.
